What makes the Weinert’s story so unique is that the two children have diabetes while the two parents—who do not have diabetes—are leading researchers and scientists in diabetes at Roche.
Maybe that’s where their grounded no-nonsense approach to diabetes stems from. “I just have to live with this problem. My friends know and they support me,” says Alex. Her brother agrees, “It’s really not that big of a change because I have gotten used to it now.”
While the parents are at work trying to create better lives and solutions for people with diabetes, Alex and Doug are pursuing the same interests as any kid their ages: drawing, reading, hanging out with friends, and playing on the computer. “They’re just two regular kids trying to get by,” says mom, Sandy.
